Off-Collar Runs with the Snövind Pack

Every weekend, when the weather allows, the Snövind Malamutes get what they love most — freedom. Our weekend runs are off-collar adventures where the dogs get to stretch their legs, explore, and burn energy in a controlled, safe environment. This is more than just exercise — it’s a vital part of keeping our working dogs mentally sharp, physically fit, and socially balanced.

These runs are only done during the snow-free months, from late spring through early autumn, when conditions are safe and we’re not on the sled.

🐾 Why We Do It:

  • Mental stimulation: freedom to sniff, track, and move naturally
  • Physical conditioning: full-speed movement and terrain variety
  • Pack bonding: running as a unit without lines or commands
  • Recall training: reinforcing off-leash obedience and trust

What You’ll Need for a Safe Off-Collar Run

Even though it’s off-leash, preparation is key. Here’s our checklist:

Essential Gear:

  • Tracking collars or GPS units (optional but ideal in large areas)
  • Standard collars with ID tags
  • High-visibility harnesses (if running near trails or roads)
  • Long line (for younger or not fully trained dogs, if needed)

Training Essentials:

  • Solid recall (with each dog individually and as a group)
  • Verbal cue control (like “wait,” “leave it,” or “this way”)
  • High-value treats (for mid-run recall and reward)
  • Whistle or sound cue (consistent signal for regroup)

Other Considerations:

  • Water (either carried or near a natural water source)
  • Paw check supplies (especially in hot or rocky terrain)
  • Emergency leash or slip lead in case of unexpected encounters
  • First aid kit (basic canine outdoor kit)

🏞️ Safety & Setup

We only do these runs in remote, safe areas away from traffic, livestock, and crowds. Familiar trails are preferred, and we avoid areas with known wildlife activity during pup season.

Each run is supervised and structured — the dogs may be off-leash, but they know their limits and are called back often to reinforce focus and pack direction. Younger dogs like Pella are still learning, so she’ll either run with a long line or stay close to us.

🐕 Final Thoughts

Off-collar runs are one of the highlights of our week, for both humans and dogs. It’s where all the training and trust come together. They come home muddy, tired, happy — and ready for a nap before the next adventure.
