🐾 Snövind Malamutes 7-Day Off-Season Training Plan
During the snow-free months — from late spring through early autumn — training at Snövind Malamutes shifts from sled work to a diverse weekly schedule focused on conditioning, strength, mental stimulation, and team bonding.
With a pack of 7 Malamutes ranging from 4 months to 3 years, this plan is designed to meet every dog where they are developmentally.
Monday — Solo Walks & Recovery
After a fun-filled weekend of off-leash runs, Mondays are a time to reset. Each dog gets a solo leash walk, giving them one-on-one time to stretch their legs, sniff around, and enjoy some quiet bonding. It’s a low-pressure way to transition into the new week.
Tuesday — Conditioning + Tyre Pull (Light Strength Day)
- 2–3-year-olds: Short tyre pull sessions on grassy terrain
10–15 minutes per dog • Focus: form, confidence, muscle tone - 1-year-olds: Light object drag walks (no tyre) + leash walk
5–10 min drag + 20 min walk - Puppy (4 months): Gentle leash walk + new surface exposure
10–15 minutes max • No weight or pulling
Wednesday — Team Runs & Obedience (Moderate Day)
- 2–3-year-olds: Team run with ATV or bike (2-dog teams)
3–5 km at a moderate pace • Goal: maintain endurance and responsiveness - 1-year-olds: Jog beside bike or handler
2–3 km light run • Keep it playful - Puppy: Recall games and soft foundation skills
10–15 minutes of focused play
Thursday — Strength & Mindwork
- 2–3-year-olds: Hill walks with tyres, tug games, scent puzzles
20–30 minutes total - 1-year-olds: Light hill walks (no resistance) + nosework
20–25 minutes - Puppy: Crate games, balance pads, scent work
5–10 minutes
Friday — Long Walks & Water Fun
- 2–3-year-olds: Long leash hike or trail walk
3–5 km with breaks - 1-year-olds: Endurance walk
2–3 km - Puppy: Exploratory leash walk
15–20 minutes max
Optional: Water play in lakes or streams for gentle joint work and cooling off.
Saturday & Sunday — Off-Leash Adventure Runs
When the weather allows, the Snövind Malamutes enjoy free off-leash runs in safe, enclosed areas. These sessions are pure joy — the dogs sprint, play, and explore to their hearts’ content.
This isn’t just about burning energy — it’s essential for mental health, social bonding, and keeping our working dogs balanced and fulfilled.
⚖️ Age-Appropriate Training: Why It Matters
Every activity is matched to the dog’s age and development stage:
- Puppy (4 months): Confidence building and exploration only
- 1-year-olds: Light training and intro to structure
- 2–3-year-olds: Full resistance training and team work
Each session prioritizes safety, structure, and fun — the pillars of a strong, confident working dog.
