We don't always have snow, even in Sweden. But a Malamute's need to work doesn't stop when the snow melts. Here is how we keep our pack conditioned year-round.
Dryland Mushing with ATVs
When there is no snow, our pack hits the forest trails pulling a four-wheeler (ATV) in neutral gear. This provides the heavy resistance Malamutes love. Running teams of 2 or 3 dogs, we do 5-7 km runs early in the morning when the temperatures are cool. It builds incredible muscle mass and mimics the sensation of pulling a heavy sled.
Weighted Backpacks
For daily walks, a dog backpack is a fantastic tool. Using a high-quality pack (like the Ruffwear Approach), we load up to 10% of the dog's body weight using water bottles. The added weight turns a simple walk into a focused working session. The psychological effect is immediate—they go into "work mode" and become highly focused.
Swimming: The Ultimate Low-Impact Workout
Not all Malamutes love water, but those that do benefit immensely from swimming. It provides a full-body cardiovascular workout with zero impact on their joints. It is also one of the only safe ways to exercise them vigorously during the warmer summer months.
Mental Exhaustion
Never underestimate the power of mental fatigue. A 20-minute intense training session learning new tricks, doing nose work (scent detection), or navigating agility obstacles can exhaust a Malamute just as much as a 5km run. A tired brain leads to a calm dog.
